Rating: *****
This is an excellent book!  Not only does it help children see the importance of sharing with friends and being kind, and have repetition to all children to read along, it also introduces them to many mathematical concepts such as fractions and division!

Classroom ideas:

This book can be used within the classroom in many ways. The children can practice one-to-one correspondence as they count the different amount of cookies each child gets throughout the story.  It can also be used to introduce the concept of division.  Using fake cookies or manipulatives, children can divide the cookies for each new character that arrives in the story, making sure to share the cookies evenly.  Depending on the amount of children in the class, two students can pretend to be Sam and Victoria having six cookies each in front of them.  As the story progresses, allow different students to pretend to be the neighbors ringing the doorbell and have the class figure out how to evenly share all twelve cookies.  Students can also be asked to figure out how many less cookies do the characters have after the doorbell rings.  As a culminating activity, bake a different amount of cookies and repeat the activity allowing the students to enjoy eating them at the end!
